Welcome to the 5th SSU conference!
The conference is organised by the Faculty of Modern Languages (FML), University of Warsaw, home of English, French, German, Hungarian, Iberian, Italian and intercultural studies. In light of the linguistic and cultural diversity of the FML, the presentation languages of the 5th SSU conference are English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. 

The key conference themes are multilingualism and diversity in the context of an individual language learner and language settings and classrooms. We welcome presentations related to all aspects of language learning strategies, including but not limited to strategic learning and teaching, teacher education, technology, and theoretical aspects of learning strategy research around widely understood topics of multilingualism, diversity, and inclusivity.

Keynote speakers

MirosÅ‚aw Pawlak is Professor of English in the English Department, Faculty of Pedagogy and Fine Arts, Adam Mickiewicz University, Kalisz, Poland, and in the Department of Research on Language and Communication, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Applied Sciences, Konin, Poland. His main areas of interest are form-focused instruction, corrective feedback, pronunciation teaching, classroom interaction, learner autonomy, learning strategies, motivation, willingness to communicate, emotions, in particular boredom, grit and study abroad. His most recent publications include Error Correction in the Foreign Language Classroom: Reconsidering the Issues (2015, Springer), Willingness to Communicate in Instructed Second Language Acquisition: Combining a Macro- and Micro-Perspective (with Anna Mystkowska-Wiertelak, 2017, Multilingual Matters), Boredom in the Foreign Language Classroom: A Micro-Perspective (with Joanna Zawodniak and Mariusz Kruk, 2020, Springer), Exploring the Interface Between Individual Difference Variables and the Knowledge of Second language Grammar (2021, Springer Nature), Understanding Emotions in English Language Learning in Virtual Worlds (with Mariusz Kruk, 2022, Routledge) and Individual Differences in Computer Assisted Language Learning Research (with Mariusz Kruk, 2022, Routledge). He is Editor of the journals Studies in Second Language Learning and Teaching and Konin Language Studies, as well as the book series Second Language Learning and Teaching, published by Springer. Professor MirosÅ‚aw Pawlak has received numerous awards from the Polish Minister of Higher Education and Science and Rector of Adam Mickiewicz University. He served as President of the Polish Association of Modern Languages in the years 2013-2016 and President of the International Federation of Language Teacher Associations (FIPLV) between 2017 and 2020.

Tanja Angelovska 

Tanja Angelovska is a Full Professor and Chair of "Research on foreign language learning and teaching" at the Institute for English/American Studies at the University of Kassel in Germany. Her research areas include L2/L3 acquisition and (psycho/neuro)-linguistically-informed evidence-based L2/L3 teaching. She is an associate editor of Ampersand: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Language Sciences and Bilingualism (and has published research in several journals, including Applied Linguistics Review; International Journal of Bilingualism; International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching; Instructed Second Language Acquisition; Languages; Language Awareness; Studies in Second Language Learning and Teaching, among others. She is co-author of Second Language Acquisition: A Theoretical Introduction to Real World Applications (Bloomsbury, 2016) and co-editor of L3 Syntactic Transfer (Benjamins, 2017).

Nathan Thomas is a Lecturer in TESOL at the IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society, University College London. He also serves as Associate Editor for the journal System. Nathan is mainly interested in theoretical-conceptual issues regarding strategies for language learning and use, and the development of innovative—mostly qualitative—research methods to explore the complexity of strategic behavior. He has published widely on these and other topics in leading academic journals. Prior to his current roles, he taught English for academic purposes in the UK and spent ten years teaching in China and Thailand. This practical experience guides his scholarly work.
